5 Reasons Your Hair is Brassy:
We’ve all been there. Some time has passed since your last hair color treatment, and your locks are beginning to look warmer than they should. It’s so frustrating! But brassy hair happens, especially for blondes. But don’t worry, there is a bright side; there are many things you can do to prevent those not-so-pretty brassy tones. Here are five reasons your hair might be getting brassy and our favorite products to prevent it from happening in the first place!
1. Well Water — This is probably one of the worst culprits because it is not easy to fix. Well water contains high levels of copper, iron, and other minerals that, over time, “stain” your hair with tones of yellow, orange, or green. A quick and easy fix is getting a filter for your shower head, which can be purchased nearly anywhere. As well as using a clarifying shampoo, like the Deep Clean by Eleven which effectively removes any excess well water buildup, oils, and minerals. We recommend using this once a week or as needed.

2. Hot Tools — Hot tools make your hair brassy for a couple of reasons, one being that your tools are past their prime time or you are using them without heat protection. The heat from these tools can fade your toner, and also, any build-up from hair products can heat up and stain your hair, giving it that “burnt” brassy look. Kevin Murphy Heated Defense is a weightless and invisible leave-in foam to protect your hair against damage, giving you up to 450 degrees of heat protection. This distributes easily and disappears in all hair types, providing you with the coverage you need.

3. Build-up Blonde hair is like a sponge. With that being said, anything that is applied to your hair is getting absorbed into the hair strands. Too much build-up of any kind can cause brassiness and actually discolor your hair. To avoid build-up, use a shampoo like Kevin Murphy Maxiwash, which gently detoxifies your hair and scalp. Helping to purify, brighten, and balance the scalp's pH balance.
4. Swimming Pool & Sun — The chlorine and algaecides that are found in pools also build up on your hair, leaving it dry, dull, and green. Wet your hair with tap water before you jump in the pool, and also spray on a leave-in conditioner like the Kevin Murphy Untangled. This leave-in conditioner is formulated specifically to strengthen and moisturize your hair and also limit the number of chemicals your hair absorbs. A leave-in conditioner also acts as a great sunblock for your hair!
5. Toner — This is one of the most common reasons your hair gets brassy over time. The more you shampoo, the faster your toner will fade. Using a high-quality color-enhancing purple shampoo on a regular basis will help keep your toner lasting longer. Our favorite product is Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel, it rescues that dull color taking it from drab back to fab. An added bonus is it’s infused with lavender extracts leaving your hair smell amazing.
Another option that most of our clients don’t know about is The Ultimate Refresher which is a quick appointment that includes toner, scalp massage, and a blowout. This will make a world of difference and is great for a little pick-me-up.
